DEFINITION OF TERMS
Broadband Internet access, often shortened to just broadband, is a high data rate Internet access. In general; broadband refers to telecommunication in which a wide band of frequencies is available to transmit information. Because a wide band of frequencies is available, information can be multiplexed and sent on many different frequencies or channels within the band concurrently.

Bandwidth
Bandwidth is a measure of available or consumed data communication resources expressed in bits/second or multiples of it (kilobits/s, megabits/s etc). In electronic communication, bandwidth is the width of the range (or band) of frequencies that an electronic signal uses on a given transmission medium.

ZARNet SERVICES

Network design
Design considerations for computer networks cover a wide range of topics including layout, capacity planning, and security. In short it is planning, implementing and commissioning a network.

Server farming
Server farm or server cluster is a collection of computer servers usually maintained by an enterprise to accomplish server needs far beyond the capability of one machine. Server farms often have backup servers, which can take over the function of primary servers in the event of a primary server failure.

Web hosting
A web hosting service is a type of Internet hosting service that allows individuals and organizations to make their own website accessible via the World Wide Web. Web hosts are companies that provide space on a server they own or lease for use by their clients as well as providing internet connectivity, typically in a data center.

Web design
Web design is the skill of creating presentations of content (usually hypertext or hypermedia) that is delivered to an end-user through the World Wide Web, by way of a Web browser or other Web-enabled software like Internet television clients, micro blogging clients and RSS readers.

Web development
Web development is a broad term for the work involved in developing a web site for the Internet (World Wide Web) or an intranet (a private network) . This can include web design, web content development, client liaison, client-side/server-side scripting, web server and network security configuration, and e-commerce development. However, among web professionals, "web development" usually refers to the main non-design aspects of building web sites: writing markup and coding. Web development can range from developing the simplest static single page of plain text to the most complex web-based internet applications, electronic businesses, or social network services.

Wimax
Wimax, an acronym for Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access, is a telecommunications technology that provides fixed and fully mobile internet access.

E-mail

Electronic mail commonly abbreviated email or e-mail, is a method of exchanging digital messages. E-mail systems are based on a randy spears store-and-forward model in which e-mail server computer systems accept, forward, deliver and store messages on behalf of users, who only need to connect to the e-mail infrastructure, typically an e-mail server.

Mail hosting

ZARNet offers mail hosting services which allows the storage of emails on servers normally together with a number of email addresses which can be accessed using standard email clients such as MS Outlook. Mail hosting is normally a premium service which can act as an alternative to advertisement supported email or web mail.

E-commerce system development

Business conducted through the use of computers, telephones, fax machines, barcode readers, credit cards, automated teller machines (ATM) or other electronic appliances (whether or not using the internet) without the exchange of paper-based documents. It includes activities such as procurement, order entry, transaction processing, payment, authentication and non-repudiation, inventory control, order fulfillment, and customer support. When a buyer pays with a bank card swiped through a magnetic-stripe-reader, he or she is participating in e-commerce.

Dial up configuration

This is an internet connection link which uses telephone lines. It is normally used by individual clients for home use. The client is required to have the following to facilitate a dial up connection:

  •  Telephone line
  •  Modem (internal or external)
  •  A basic computer

A digital line is most suitable compared to an analogue line. A dial up connection has its disadvantages such as the maximum bandwidth speed is 56kbps and the average is 33kbps which is relatively slow. The other disadvantage is that the client has to pays for two bills, one for internet and the telephone rentals.

Leased lines
This is the use of a copper telephone line which is converted for the use of data transmission. The requirements for a leased line connection are:

  • ADSL modem
  • Telephone Line which is applied through Telone.

 VSAT
VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal) is a satellite communications system that serves home and business users.
